I ran for the Board in 2013 because the district was in a period of worsening achievement for all students and especially our students of color. Since then, we have worked to ensure that ALL of our students feel a sense of identity and possibility every day. I believe this is a necessary ingredient to academic success. We are seeing results with 10% increase in students meeting growth targets last year. We have also adopted an equity agenda to bolster this progress. This work must continue.
A key priority for me has been to increase accountability for student outcomes and financial solvency at the Board level. As liaison to the strategic planning process, I worked with Administration to create a holistic set of measures and benchmarks to gauge our progress and ensure we stay focused on our objectives for kids and families. I have worked to face our financial challenges head on and address our structural deficit on the heels of huge enrollment growth. This work must continue.
A tenant of my Achieve Together platform has been that we cannot do it alone. I believe this more than ever and here's one example of why. In 2013 there was a proposal to reduce summer school because it "wasn't working and was too costly". The Board challenged the district to better reach our students through partnerships. The team and community responded. This year we provided programming to twice the students at half the cost, with better results. This work must continue.
